In Times Like These…

Dear Friends,

We all are facing and unprecedented time in America that most of us have not seen in our lifetime. The reality is that we at war with COVID-19. In this warfare the very life and lifestyle we are accustomed is under attack.  As Christians, were have to fight this was with wisdom and faith. The wisdom to do what is right in order to come out of this victoriously and the faith to know that God is in charge and control of all things. Those of us who believe this can live through these days with caution, not fear, wisdom, not anger, and faith with determination.

This really can be one of the Church’s most finest hour even though many Christians may identify with the Apostle Paul when he said; “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down…” Paul placed this statements between to book ends that remind us of the Hope, Deliverance & Victory, we have in Jesus Christ. Let’s read Second Corinthians chapter 4, verses 7-10 in context.

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.

Regardless of the difficulty of the time in which we live and the frailty of our human condition, we carry the life force and strength of Jesus Christ with in us. That means our bodies, mind, soul and, spirit. This enables us, as it has done for brothers and sisters in Christ through the ages to live well with purpose and meaning through our particular time in history.

Let me offer three passages of scripture that I pray will give you hope and encouragement during this life altering experience of COVID-19.

Matthew 7:24-25 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

If we are living on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ following the way of his teaching, learning knowing and growing in the truth He taught, we will be free we will have a perspective on life that will enable us to live well in this world of chaos. Why because Christ Has All Our Solutions

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

When you consider all of the propaganda, political gamesmanship, disproportion amount of sickness and death among people of color and those who are homeless, mentally ill and living on the margins. The faithful healthcare professional and others who contracted Covid-19 or died while helping others.  The struggle that people are dealing with in terms of the new normal of social distancing, staying at home with family, working at home with children around or having to go to work away form home under these strenuous circumstances it can can cause much stress ,strain and inner turmoil that can be had to see a clear why through this thing. But even though we know impart God will make thing clear to us

Psalms 37:23-24, The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall…

We know that Jesus is the way, we know that of David in Psalms 23 where he said, The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not [a]want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the [c]still waters.  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

What an encouraging word by which to live as we walk in the walk in the steps that God has prepared for us everyday of our lives. Especially for such a time as this.

Hear is a suggestion: Write a letter to God about how you feel as it relates to Covid-19 and your life.  Use these three scriptures as an outline if you’d like or use and scriptures that speak to you. I would be glad to read your prayers if you’d like to send them to us at, pastor@jacobswellmemphis.org
