From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Friends,

I greet you in the love of Christ Jesus. As we move into the fall season, we are thankful to God and our volunteers, partnering churches, and families who faithfully provide meals every Friday and Saturday. We are also grateful to our donors who support our work in reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reciprocation

A Devotional Thought

I have a pastor friend who God has used in a mighty way to bring change to the city in which he lives. Earlier in his ministry, he entered a state of depression and severe thoughts of suicide. As a young man coming out of the military, my friend met a woman who became a good friend, and he thought she might be the one to ask for her hand in marriage. As time passed, he met another woman who knocked him off his feet and married her instead. After a few years, they had trouble in their marriage. My friend began to question whether the decision to marry the second woman was the right decision. One day after he overcame his illness, he revealed that he had learned how to deal with life’s second choices by pressing on and trusting God.

The Message of Hope Deliverance & Victory is that when we face the troubling and painful moments of life, we will find victory when we yield to the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Jacob’s Well welcomes churches, individuals, families, youth groups, fraternities, sororities, and organizations to give back to the community and have service hours they need to complete. Just contact us at 901-209-1189 or visit our website https://jacobswellmemphis.org for details on volunteering at the “Well.”

Prayer of the Month

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and all that He is doing at Jacob’s Well. I thank him for the transformation of lives. I rejoice in the Holy Spirit bringing all those thirsting for that Living Water to Your Well. May their cups overflow with Your abundant giving.

Help us remember that we are all Your children and loved beyond our wildest imaginations. Let us remember that victory through you, Lord Jesus Christ, with our daily surrender and acceptance of your mercy and grace in your Holy Word that gives us the power to resist temptation.  In your precious name Loving Jesus.  Amen & Alleluia

“Ministry Update”

by Pastor Jay Johnson

Praise God for all His keeping power.  January 2020  started with Jacob’s Well flourishing in numbers and programs within the downtown Memphis homeless community.

We saw people blessed to come off the street, some finding jobs and needing work clothes we could provide. We averaged about 70 in our dinner meals, and about 25 were staying to hear the word. Our Weekly Saturday Recovery Bible Study group averaged between 35-50. Monday – Thursday Bible Study averaged 10-16.

Then COVID-19 became more of a threat, with the city government calling for stay-at-home orders, wearing masks, and churches finding new ways of doing church in a pandemic.

In March, our inside services stopped; we went to Zoom and served bag dinners at the door. Eventually, we included Friday in our schedule. These consisted of meat eaten from a can, bread, fruit, and a dessert.  So in the direst times of Covid-19, Jacob’s Well remained active in the mission of caring for the homeless community.

For a brief time in 2021, we’ve been able to open and rebuild old relationships and build new ones. In September of 2021, we are serving food from the kitchen, holding services, and having fellowship with new and old friends, But now Covid-19 and its variants are back. We may be closing and revamping our services again soon.

Should we need to close, we will continue services on Zoom or FaceBook. We have already started preparing emergency food bags. We’ve learned more things can go in the bags and serve our friends over two to three days instead of just one meal.

Now, Jacob’s Well has not done this alone. With helping hands from other churches and individuals, the financial help from many, and donations of hygiene products, with God’s help, we will continue to serve.
